Perfection is Not the Point

A friend of mine told me how one of my previous sketches is a bit out of proportion. Before answering, I paused and thought of the many reasons why artists or anyone cannot seem to begin something because they want to reach that state where they can tell themselves, “This is perfect! I am ready.”

But in reality is we can never be ready unless we start at some point and learn from the process of doing– mistakes and all. I replied politely that it was a live sketch of a person and I had to do it quickly before there are any changes in the placement of my subject.

Needless to say I had fun recording an event into my sketchbook which I can remember always. The quick strokes and the moving on (of subjects) are all part of the journey of creating something. I am learning and practicing and slowing down and observing.

What are some of the things that you have been hesitating to begin? Maybe it’s sharing the Gospel to our unbelieving friends? Joining a ministry? Volunteering at an event or charity? Creating that online course? Writing a book? Joining an exhibition? Whatever that is choose to begin today, narrow down the details of what needs to be accomplished, do not rush, start on one small task a day, rest and celebrate, give thanks to God in everything.

Hi Elisa! Oh my, your post came timely to remind me (for the nth time) to do the things I’ve been planning to do for the longest time because I fear that I am not yet ready and I am not “qualified”! It’s an on-going battle in my brain because the other half of my brain & heart tells me that God did not put these dreams in my heart without equipping me with everything I need to make them come to pass. But thanks for the constant reminder He gives me thru you and other artists as well. :)

By the way, are you still in Sg? Will be there tomorrow and the days to come. Would love to finally meet u and maybe we can sketchwalk or cafe paint together! :) PM me. :)

Hello Momi Airees! thank you for dropping by and for sharing your story. Our fears are there to sort of protect us from failure and the unknown risk but i find that it is difficult to learn something new if i don’t try and at least do something about it. the Bible illustrates many stories about fear. they think that they were not capable of doing what God called them to do because of fear that they are not good etc. God always has to empower them and assure them that He is with them and that they need not be afraid. the more that we trust God and step out in faith as we carry out his plans for us the more that we experience his grace that enables us to do this work for his glory. God bless and see you!
